Unbalanced Science

For a one-day honeymoon on Monday we explored to the renovated California Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park. We arrived at 9:30 when the doors opened, snagged our 10:30 am planetarium tickets, whizzed through the Rain Forest, saw the planetarium show, viewed the roof garden, ate, went to the bug show, braved the strollers to walk through the remaining space, and left happy and a bit dazed in the middle of the afternoon. The Academy preaches environmentalism in all exhibits, floor space, and in nearly every utterance. They have a point of view. Unfortunately, they promote their view at the expense [...]

Faces on the Internet

I find it odd to be surfing the Internet and running into a picture of myself that I did not post.  I'm not worried about having my soul stolen. But, I have trouble with the concept that someone would consider something I'm doing important enough to share as part of their life. Found on Facebook.  A picture of our first dance (a C-1 tip) on Saturday.  Sandie Bryant was the caller.

Each morning we get up and check the overnight blogs and poll analysis on Fivethrityeight.com . The site aggregates polls and weights their results through statistical analysis of the pollsters past record and their collection methods. Fivethirtyeight's guru is Nate Silver who previously made his money and fame by analyzing baseball statistics and predicting winning teams. We've watched the projections stay mostly even over the summer, drift blue during the Democratic Convention, and veer red after the Palin selection.  The last couple weeks have been more comfortable to watch. Nate talks about the Bradley Effect and how he's accounted for other common [...]

Perfection

The perfect is the enemy of the good. -- VoltaireWhat can I say when very intelligent people stand back and say that neither/none of the viable candidates running for President deserves their vote?  They are very intelligent, and therefore they have already analyzed the alternatives, weighed the pluses and minuses, and are convinced of the superior rationality of their decision. These Greens/Libertarians/unregistered folk have their killer points at the ready:I could never vote for someone who said “x”, who voted for “y”, or won’t commit to “z”. The candidate(s) are either too centrist, or pandering too much to the extremes. [...]

Back from the Woods

redozdachs and I are back in town after seeing friends and plays in Ashland and then going to the Oregon coast for a family reunion of the Henry Wood family of Middleborough, MA.  Sixty of us anal-retentive Woods and their spouses enjoyed Westwind, just north of Lincoln City. Cousin Anne figures that the only way to get the youngest generation of our New England farm family to come to a reunion is to gather where there is plenty of pretty scenery and outdoor stuff to do.  Last time we met was in 1989 at Redfish Lake, ID. Both sites worked well, [...]

Good thing that Geoff is Driving

By |2008-08-27T15:50:00-07:00August 27, 2008|Uncategorized|

We were on highway 505 when Geoff flipped radio stations and heard Senator Clinton move to nominate Senator Obama by acclimation Nancy Pelosi did a quick voice vote and announced that the motion passed. We have a black man, a man younger than I, as major party candidate for President. Good thing Geoff was driving 'cause it's hard to see through tears.... even when they are tears of joy.
