Happy End of Tax Season

Now that the three-month horror leading up to April 15th is over for 2005, it's time to read and write again. Of course the first bright and shiny thing that caught my attention is another fun, silly poll... Your Linguistic Profile: 45% General American English 35% Yankee (born in Boston) 15% Dixie (dated a Southerner for a year) 5% Upper Midwestern (Chicago fly-in contamination?) 0% Midwestern What Kind of American English Do You Speak?

Unitarian Jihad

Jon Carroll revealed the existence of the Unitarian Jihad in his SF Chronicle column Friday. As a Unitarian Universalist myself, I was stunned that he'd reveal our secrets to the great unwashed who don't worship the Cosmic Muffin. Of course, there's no such thing as bad publicity.  And the column is pretty funny!

Restaurant Review: J. George’s Teriyaki and Hamburger Donuts

By |2005-04-01T06:32:00-08:00April 1, 2005|Uncategorized|

Catch the newest food find and savor the savory creations of noted chef J. George. Enjoy a special tasting flight of her world-famous fusion donuts cooked fresh daily in this Mission-district establishment. From the succulent hamburger donut to the subtitle teriyaki variant (both featured on the sign in the picture), the intense flavors are incredible. Additional menu items include the popular vegetarian alternative, an asparagus beet ragout donut. Of course, for the hard-core eaters of seared mammal flesh, there may still be some rabbit and lamb donuts left over from last week's Easter special. LJ insiders invite you to just [...]

A Dark(er) Tower

By |2005-03-27T09:18:00-08:00March 27, 2005|Uncategorized|

Finding Tower Market and its butcher shop was another step on my journey toward being a real San Franciscan.  As a non-red-meat eater I knew that I missed much of the point of going to Tower. But, it was fun to talk about my discovery with older relatives who went to Tower when they were young.  It was nice to know that another San Francisco tradition was still going strong. The butcher shop was well provisioned in fresh fish and fowl of various pedigrees.  I never had any food cut to my specifications before Tower, and asking for the chicken to [...]

Frank Talk

"If you don't want a decision to be made politically, why in the world do you ask 535 politicians to make it?" -- Representative Barney Frank (D-Mass) regarding Congress's recent action to allow Federal Courts to get involved in the Terri Schiavo tragedy.

Countdown to Confusion

By |2005-03-21T18:50:00-08:00March 21, 2005|Uncategorized|

The law of unintended consequences is the only law the countdown walk/don't walk lights facilitate.  They don't help the laws meant to mediate between the autos and the people as far as I can tell. The lights have been installed all over San Francisco, and they are widely touted as an improvement in traffic safety. I wonder.  There are many intersections where the stream of foot traffic is steady.  With the seconds flashing like they're predicting a space launch, there never seems a time when pedestrians are simply supposed to stop.  Instead the signal tells the walkers if they can stroll [...]

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Schindler…

By |2005-03-20T08:07:00-08:00March 20, 2005|Uncategorized|

Bob and Mary, I am sorry, but someone should have told this before now.  Someone closer to you should have given you the news.  Someone who knows how to speak to your soul should have been taken the time to explain something to you.  But, apparently they haven’t, so please sit down.  Take a deep breath.  It’s awful information.  Your daughter, Terri Schiavo, is dead. God (or “the universe” or “Allah” or whatever name is most familiar to you) took her from this life.  […]

Self Righteousness on Steroids

By |2005-03-19T15:32:00-08:00March 19, 2005|Uncategorized|

The oppressive omnipresence of stories and commentaries on the use of steroids by professional baseball players is a perfect storm of squalid self-righteousness. The hysteria grows to a Category 5 scandal as media and political attention seekers swirl together in a cesspool of hypercritical hypocrisy. We are relentlessly fed stories with a simplistically stated, easily understood, good vs evil moral. We are treated to star gazing and star bashing: it's sport celebrity schadenfreude as an art form. The American Way of Life is threatened!  Politicians are rushing in to save our youth.  Sports reporters are vigorously moaning about our lost [...]
