Good Start to a Day

By |2005-02-09T11:03:00-08:00February 9, 2005|Uncategorized|

One minister, one nun, one mother and daughter team, and a couple other of us started the day at 5 am by buttering bread, toasting it, setting plates, opening applesauce cans, making pancakes, and serving food.  February is my church's turn to host 70 men at night as part of the Interfaith Homeless Shelter, and this morning was one of my breakfast slots. The short hour and a half of volunteering is one of those experiences that makes me wonder if the program is set up for the alleged beneficiaries or if it's more to make us middle-class folks feel good about [...]

What’s Good for Groundhogs is Good for America

By |2005-02-04T17:31:00-08:00February 4, 2005|Uncategorized|

One of my clients has been approached to advertise on the San Francisco radio station that is carrying the progressive talk radio line-up, Air America.  "Talk Radio from the Left" is their tag line, and it's been live and blogged about elsewhere since last fall. Ignoring the business judgments involved, supporting another viewpoint on the radio has a definite emotional appeal!  From an email today: The other day was Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address. As Air America Radio pointed out, it is an ironic juxtaposition: "one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature [...]

Positive Spin

By |2005-02-04T07:48:00-08:00February 4, 2005|Uncategorized|

I read a lot of articles to prepare e-newsletters for clients.  I liked this article 'cause it gives examples on how to put a true, positive spin on potentially negative situations in employment interviews.  I'm just posting this for reference.

To a New LJ User

One of my friends just signed up for a LJ account.  No entries yet, so he's not ready for a link. However, he has encountered the great LJ information void that greets new users.  He was looking for a step-by-step guide, and feels a bit abandoned.  I've tried to remember the things I learned in the past month.  Additions and corrections are welcome! The New Cliff House

By |2005-01-30T16:03:00-08:00January 30, 2005|Uncategorized|

Geoff's Uncle Maurie treated us to a special brunch today at the newly renovated Cliff House. What a great job they did with the building!  The new dining area on the north side has fantastic views of the rocks and seals.  Grand windows look out over the ocean, and light and surf is brought inside at every turn. Our family has a long tradition of leisurely brunches at the buffet. The harp is still there, and the food was, if anything, better than we remembered. Click for photographs of the new Cliff House and our brunch.

Today's LJ play session was a couple hours of mulling over of S2 Component layout advanced options. Wonderful geeky stuff, and complex enough to keep me from tweaking the journal's look... probably for quite a while. The only external change I managed today was to include a "Link for this entry" on every entry. I copied that completely from the Component Help journal, and don't even like the way every entry gets the message. My journal entries and those on my friends' page that already have comments on them now have two identical links to the full entry. One says [...]

Getting In Trouble at Gold’s

By |2005-01-28T13:59:00-08:00January 28, 2005|Uncategorized|

I know how I'm supposed to get in trouble at the gym.  I read all the signs in the locker room about what will get me on management's black list. But, I did it a different way. I went up to the desk at Brannan Street Gold's Thursday morning just after they broke into the house music to deliver a 30-second spiel on their sun tanning booth special.  I told the desk clerks that I really didn't like having commercials interrupting the background music, especially since we're kind of a captive audience while working out. "We tell people about the [...]
