Climate Justice Month, D-2

By |2016-03-31T11:56:34-07:00March 20, 2016|Climate Justice Month|

There's a lot of natural beauty... and natural ugliness... in cities like San Francisco. I'll be posting photographs from the extremes and middle frequently from now through Earth Day to honor environmental justice, join my church's Commit to Respond activities, and to generally enjoy what's around me in the city. Larger and clearer versions of most pictures will be posted in an Ozdachs SmugMug gallery. A wet afternoon has this lily looking slick!

Rock Hudson Died of Alzheimer’s

In a wildly incorrect statement, Hillary Clinton yesterday praised Nancy Reagan and her husband, President Ronald Reagan, for helping America de-stigmatize AIDS and its victims.  In an MSNBC interview, Clinton expressed appreciation to the Reagans: "It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS in the 1980s," Clinton said. "And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan -- in particular Mrs. Reagan --we started a national conversation." The fact is that the Reagans were not helpful in starting a national conversation. They were completely closed-mouth and unhelpful, even when their supposedly close friend from [...]

Throw Back Thursday

I logged into Weather Underground this morning for a quick view of what the days are going to be like in Ashland for my long weekend stay.  Years ago I'd pinned four frequently looked at cities to the WU menu. There along with home town San Francisco, destination Ashland, and ancestral home of Middleborough is Kayseri, Turkey. Four years ago I'd put Kayseri on my dashboard so I could easily find out what the weather was like for the then-21-year-old gay refugee I talked with almost daily on Skype.  He'd escaped with his life from Iran into Turkey where he was [...]

Super Mediocre City

By |2016-02-05T11:56:39-08:00February 5, 2016|San Francisco|

Super Bowl 50's playing location may be in new stadium in Santa Clara, but the pre-game hype is centered in San Francisco.  The City's tourism industry is amped up on near-lethal doses of steroids and it is spewing on to the streets a mutant blend of football/corporate hype mixed with Orwellian fear of terrorism. Ferry Building from Super Bowl City Going downtown on public transportation is an amusement park ride showcasing the schizophrenic sizzle of the Super Bowl festival.  Getting on your normal morning Municipal Railway car you are likely to be greeted by three heavily armed "Homeland Security [...]

“A Song at Twilight”

By |2016-01-24T11:00:12-08:00January 23, 2016|plays|

San Francisco, CA at Theatre Rhinoceros A Song at Twilight By Noël Coward Theatre Rhinoceros’ A Song at Twilight is an excellent production in every way.  Its short, two-week run is almost half over, and I say grab a ticket. (They're cheap, too!) First, I need to address the lingering, decades-old stigma of Theatre Rhino's productions. Too often in the distant past, going to The Rhino was a duty of gaydom/lesbianness.  We went to support queer theater, and we often suffered through embarrassingly poor plays and unskilled actors.  We went to show solidarity, but we rarely went expecting much or left [...]

What Is the Motive of the Roseburg Shooter?

By |2015-10-03T16:45:51-07:00October 3, 2015|philippic|

Seriously? A motive? The media demand to know why this murderer shot his arsenal in the classroom. They badger the police and interview professional television interviewees about what set off the shooting. Every mass shooting plays out with similar, pointless questions. The shooter is crazy. Do we need to "understand" his psychotic delusions?  Can we possibly follow the logic he used as he plotted mass murder? We Normals crave the ability to understand the psychotic's mental process, presumably so we could argue with and save the next delusional man bent on exterminating random people around him. But, trying to translate crazy thought into [...]
