Day 12 — MUNI Naps and Zenith Has Her Stitches Removed

By |2018-10-05T18:57:22-07:00October 5, 2018|dachshunds|

We blew it! The stitches from Zenith's C-Section were supposed to be removed on Day 9 or 10, according to the discharge instructions I re-read this morning. Ooops.  Fortunately, our SF vet, Dr. Jill Chase, changed her schedule and came by about 6. She checked Zenith out, removed the stitches, said Zenith's weight was fine (I was worried Zenith's picky eating were making her thin), and wasn't worried about the probably-cottage-cheese-caused diarrhea. More importantly,  Dr. Chase marveled happily at MUNI's size and healthy look. Here's MUNI modeling chunky good health in the whelping box: Day 12 -- MUNI sleeping [...]

Day 11 — Picture Perfect

By |2018-10-04T18:02:13-07:00October 4, 2018|dachshunds|

There has been so much more to write about than I expected when I started chronicling our new relationship with Zenith's puppies... now puppy. I'd expected that most posts would be pictures, with a some comments about weights or behaviors. At least until the puppies started crawling a moving around a bit. Today has been one of the days I expected. Not much going on on the puppy front. I have just been going into the room and looking adoringly at the girl. Here are a couple photos from today.  As always, please click on a picture to see a larger [...]

Day 10 — Peaceful Growth

By |2018-10-04T17:07:24-07:00October 3, 2018|dachshunds|

It's nice to post predictable puppy progress. We are all happy with a few days of quiet normality! MUNI skipped the 14 oz level and showed up in the scale at 15.38 oz this morning! Good, steady gain. I dug out our guides and confirmed that I need to put away the flash for a while. MUNI's eyes should be opening any time now, and a bright flash could injure a young eye. So, please forgive the photos for a while. They're going to be grainy (because of the fast ISO we need for low light), with a small area [...]

Day 9 — Weighing In

By |2018-10-02T20:15:26-07:00October 2, 2018|dachshunds|

MUNI is continuing to grow at a satisfyingly fast rate. Yay! In addition to looking at her chubby, wriggling body and healthy, shiny coat, Geoffrey weighs her every morning to make sure our subjective observations match objective measures. MUNI's day starts with an after breakfast (or after her 8th breakfast at 8 am) weighing in. MUNI  at her weigh in on the towels lining the bowl that's on top of the food scale.CLICK on the picture for a larger, clearer version! This morning at 8:10 MUNI was 13.89 oz, up from 12.52 yesterday at 7:25. She is growing [...]

Day 8 — MUNI is Measuring Up

By |2018-10-01T18:51:31-07:00October 1, 2018|dachshunds|

I'm knocking on wood as I write this. We don't have a life-threatening crisis in the pack at the moment. Knock, knock! Zenith and MUNI have been comfortable spending the day together in the whelping box. Zenith will come out and greet the rest of the pack and go out back to do doggie things in the backyard (or not). She's eaten reasonable a reasonable breakfast and dinner. She makes gruntled noises when you reach in and pet her while she's nursing. MUNI is doing her part, too. She's eating, sleeping, and growing. This morning, a 1/4 day short of [...]

Day 6 — An Emergency Metro Update

By |2018-09-29T19:27:33-07:00September 29, 2018|dachshunds|

Metro Being Bottle Fed at Home Earlier this Week Metro Has Aspirated Milk at the Hospital... They tube fed him and gave him the bottle which he sucked on some. They put him back in his cage and the next time they checked him,  at about 4 pm, they saw milk coming from his nose and mouth. They x-rayed and confirmed that there is fluid in his lungs … they are giving him oxygen, and he's fighting still. The doctor said that there's nothing they can do beyond the oxygen, giving him a prophylactic antibiotic, and hoping. It [...]

Day 3 — Intervention

By |2018-10-01T18:57:43-07:00September 26, 2018|dachshunds|

Geoffrey Blowing on Metro to Keep Him Warm Prior to Feeding At the instructions of our regular vet, we went out and bought puppy nipples and bottles from Petco after her 10:30 visit. The formula Dr. Cain recommends was fine, but the delivery mechanisms we'd acquired were too large for dachshund puppies! Our SF vet, Dr. Jill Chase, returned to our house at 2:30 to help us give Metro his first bottle feeding. One part formula, two parts warm water, stir, mix, put in the bottle and feed. Pretty straight forward... unless you've never done it before, the [...]
