Sharon and Betty, Betty and Bette

Sharon McNight, our favorite cabaret singer, closed her Betty, Betty, Bette tribute to Betty Hutton, Betty Grable, and Bette Davis last night at the Plush Room. Geoff, Harlan, Blurkerbear and I helped David celebrate his birthday by cheering on Sharon. The show was good fun. Sharon is a superb show woman, and she filled the spaces between songs with a lot of details about her three subjects.  The music was tamer and more limited than some of her past shows (such as Songs to Offend (Nearly) Everyone).  But, what a voice!  Besides, as Sharon said, how often in San Francisco [...]

Eating Our Way Through South Lake Tahoe

As non-skiers non-gamblers visiting in the shoulder season, we've enjoyed the chance to relax, see scenery, play, and eat these last seven days.  The upscale restaurants in the Casinos no longer are loss leaders:  their prices show their intent to be a profit center.  However, a few area restaurants truly provide a dining experience.  Here's our recommendations. My G-g-generation

By |2005-04-21T09:13:00-07:00April 21, 2005|Uncategorized|

Twenty years ago we dated for nine months or so. From the first, we talked about how neither of us thought we'd be a couple walking hand in hand together into the sunset.  But, we said, we had a good time together while until Mr. Right showed up.  I was captured by a sunset-walking relationship first, and Mike and I stopped dating. We remained friendly, but not friends.  When we broke off, Mike decided he would resume drinking, even though he called himself an alcoholic and had not had a drink for many years.  Mike's decision to return to his drinking turned him away from me [...]

Transmit Only Mode

Both Geoff and I tried to tell people ahead of time that we'd be incommunicado April 17 - 24th for our post tax season unwinding and computer game family therapy session. We're enjoying Lake Tahoe and each other. We aren't counting puffs of different color smoke. We aren't gambling or cavorting from bar to bar. We're not even checking email: I am in transmit-only mode uploading blogs, comments, and pictures.  Of course we did leave word with key people on how to reach us in an emergency.  Funny what's an emergency. Each of us have gotten a message from the Real [...]

Happy End of Tax Season

Now that the three-month horror leading up to April 15th is over for 2005, it's time to read and write again. Of course the first bright and shiny thing that caught my attention is another fun, silly poll... Your Linguistic Profile: 45% General American English 35% Yankee (born in Boston) 15% Dixie (dated a Southerner for a year) 5% Upper Midwestern (Chicago fly-in contamination?) 0% Midwestern What Kind of American English Do You Speak?

Unitarian Jihad

Jon Carroll revealed the existence of the Unitarian Jihad in his SF Chronicle column Friday. As a Unitarian Universalist myself, I was stunned that he'd reveal our secrets to the great unwashed who don't worship the Cosmic Muffin. Of course, there's no such thing as bad publicity.  And the column is pretty funny!

Restaurant Review: J. George’s Teriyaki and Hamburger Donuts

By |2005-04-01T06:32:00-08:00April 1, 2005|Uncategorized|

Catch the newest food find and savor the savory creations of noted chef J. George. Enjoy a special tasting flight of her world-famous fusion donuts cooked fresh daily in this Mission-district establishment. From the succulent hamburger donut to the subtitle teriyaki variant (both featured on the sign in the picture), the intense flavors are incredible. Additional menu items include the popular vegetarian alternative, an asparagus beet ragout donut. Of course, for the hard-core eaters of seared mammal flesh, there may still be some rabbit and lamb donuts left over from last week's Easter special. LJ insiders invite you to just [...]

A Dark(er) Tower

Finding Tower Market and its butcher shop was another step on my journey toward being a real San Franciscan.  As a non-red-meat eater I knew that I missed much of the point of going to Tower. But, it was fun to talk about my discovery with older relatives who went to Tower when they were young.  It was nice to know that another San Francisco tradition was still going strong. The butcher shop was well provisioned in fresh fish and fowl of various pedigrees.  I never had any food cut to my specifications before Tower, and asking for the chicken to [...]
