A Completely Wonderful Vacation Completed

Geoff and Galen on Mauna Kea Ten days at sea with Geoffrey and four days visiting Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and Hawaii are complete.  I won't attempt wordy superlative descriptions, but I will organize and share the best of the 889 photographs over the next weeks. We expected good sites and great moments together.  We got them.  We didn't anticipate getting to know the excellent young people who were the crew in our breakfast spot called Sabatini's. They ran the room like a family restaurant, owned by a close and caring family.  We changed our plans so we ate dinner in [...]

The Dangers of Fighting the Last War

I remember when I was an idealistic teenager studying world history in high school.  I recall how all of us kept demanding that the teacher tell us how could other countries, including the United States, did nothing to stop Adolph Hitler in the early days of his reign.  He clearly stepped over internationally agreed-upon boundaries:  he invaded weaker countries and he murdered his own civilians.  We were told that Hitler was weak when he started, but the victors of WW-I and all other nations with the power to stop Hitler turned a blind eye.  Wearing of endless European wars, they [...]

Extremism in the Defense of Liberty is No Vice?

This morning's posts bemoaning the sentencing of a self-anointed savior of freedom are not very persuasive to me.  Moreover, I find their tone disturbing. Folks!  Really! Assumptions of absolute evil in the hearts of those on the other side of an issue is ugly.  It's not liberal, either. Deciding that you and your friends alone are on the side of the angels is too Fox-like for me to applaud. Suggesting that alternative lawful actions were not existent and that taking any other path would have been the moral equivalent of condoning murder is simply tautological blindness. Vigilance is good. Protests [...]

When Amber Alerts Hurt

By |2013-08-06T14:33:00-07:00August 6, 2013|philippic, Uncategorized|

"Wolf! Wolf! Wolf!" Crying "Wolf" is the problem I have with last night's Amber Alert that broadcast on cellphones throughout California a BOLO about a missing child from Boulevard, California. Which CHP genius decided to make the alert statewide when the incident occurred near the Mexican border AND, according to reports I read, the authorities thought the suspect was headed to Mexico or Texas? If pitting the inconvenience of getting awakened from sleep against the life of a kidnapped child seems like a fair appraisal of the situation to you, I won't argue. I think it's a queasy comparison, but [...]

Welcome to Apex and Zenith

Ozdachs Kennels is proud to announce that the puppies have approved of their adult call names.  Jill has taken the name Apex. Janice has taken the name Zenith.  Thank you to all of our friends who helped select these adult names.  They were the top selections in our survey, and Geoffrey and Galen both like how they sound.  We are especially grateful for all of the write-in names.  They were excellent, and it’s clear that we need to have more dogs so that we can use them all. We deeply considered several of the suggestions, but in the end, the [...]
